PSY/405 compares the major scientific approaches to personality. Five weekly samples cover psychoanalytic and neo-analytic theories, trait and biological approaches, behavioral and social-cognitive theories, humanistic and existential views and an integrative comparison.

It surveys personality from a scientific perspective, examining the general approaches to understanding personality, the key theorists and concepts associated with each and the strengths and limitations of the different approaches. What PSY/405 is really about

PSY/405 goes deeper than an introduction, asking how each perspective defines personality, what evidence supports it and how it would explain the same person. Students meet Freud, Jung, Adler, Horney, Allport, Eysenck, the Big Five, Skinner, Bandura, Rogers and Maslow.

Students typically analyze a historical or fictional figure through two or three theories, evaluate the research support for a perspective and write an integrative paper on which approach best explains a behavior. Common subjects include public figures, characters from film and literature and composite cases supplied by the instructor. Students learn to choose evidence from the person's life that each theory would treat as important.

What PSY/405’s assessments ask for

Faculty expect accurate theory summaries, evaluation based on evidence and coherent application to one case. Comparisons should be balanced and specific. Each theory's analysis should use its own concepts, such as defense mechanisms or self-efficacy, and the conclusion should argue which one explains the most with the best evidence.

Where students lose points in PSY/405

Work loses credit when theories are summarized without evaluation, when the case is described but not analyzed or when one perspective is dismissed without argument.
