HCS/498 is the capstone where health administration students assemble one organization's strategic plan, one section each week. The five samples here follow the plan from mission and vision through the environmental scan, SWOT analysis and goals to a board presentation.

What HCS/498 is really about

Strategy answers three questions: where the organization is, where it should go and how it will get there. HCS/498 brings together everything in the program, including finance, law, quality, human resources and marketing, and asks students to apply it to one organization facing real pressures such as payment changes, workforce shortages, competition and community need.

The work is cumulative. Students usually write a mission and vision, scan current events and trends that affect the organization, complete a SWOT analysis, set goals and measurable objectives and present the strategic decision to a governing board with slides and speaker notes.

What HCS/498’s assessments ask for

Graders reward consistency across the weeks, evidence behind every strength, weakness, opportunity and threat, objectives written in measurable terms and a final recommendation that follows from the analysis. The board presentation should be concise and decision-focused.

Where students lose points in HCS/498

Plans lose credit when the SWOT lists generic items, when goals do not connect to the analysis, when objectives lack numbers or dates, or when the presentation repeats the paper instead of asking the board for a decision.

HCS/498 questions, answered

What is the difference between a mission and a vision statement?

A mission states why the organization exists and whom it serves today; a vision describes what it aims to become in the future.

What makes an objective measurable?

It names a specific result, a number or percentage, a deadline and who is responsible, for example cutting the average time from arrival to discharge in outpatient surgery by 15% before the next fiscal year ends, with the surgical services director accountable.

What is an environmental scan?

A structured review of external factors, such as policy, payment, technology, demographics and competition, that could affect an organization's strategy.
