What STR/581 is really about

The capstone asks students to act as strategists for a real or case organization. STR/581 uses PESTEL, Porter's five forces, SWOT, the resource-based view, generic and growth strategies, balanced scorecards and risk registers to build and defend a plan that draws on finance, marketing, operations and people management.

Students typically scan an organization's external environment, analyze its resources and capabilities, choose a strategy and alternatives, address social responsibility, plan implementation with a budget and timeline and set measures and risk responses.

What STR/581’s assessments ask for

Faculty expect integration across the MBA, analysis supported by financial and market data, a strategy that follows from the analysis and implementation plans with owners, costs and measures. Executive summaries should let a board act on the plan.

Where students lose points in STR/581

Work loses credit when SWOT items are lists without implications, when the chosen strategy does not match the analysis or when implementation lacks a budget and timeline. Ignoring risks and competitor responses is another gap. Keep the organization's figures consistent across the weekly parts, and update earlier sections when later analysis changes the picture rather than leaving the two in conflict.
