What LDR/305 is really about

Leadership theory has moved from traits to behaviors, situations and relationships. LDR/305 introduces trait, behavioral, situational, contingency, transformational and servant leadership and asks how leaders create a vision, act responsibly toward stakeholders and make ethical choices.

Assignments usually include analyzing a known leader through several theories, assessing one's own style, writing a vision statement for an organization, evaluating a company's social responsibility and working through an ethics case.

What LDR/305’s assessments ask for

Faculty look for theories explained accurately, applied to specific behaviors, compared on strengths and limits and linked to ethical and responsible leadership. Using more than one theory to explain the same leader shows depth.

Where students lose points in LDR/305

Work loses credit when theories are only defined, when leaders are praised without analysis or when ethics cases are answered with opinion. Confusing transformational with transactional leadership is a frequent slip. A second frequent slip is citing a famous executive as proof that a theory works. One leader's success rarely proves a model; research on groups of leaders and teams carries more weight. Link any claim about vision or corporate responsibility to a documented action the organization took, and weigh what that action cost it.
